What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization Explained

By Michael Huth, Chief Product Officer at Marketing51

The web used to work like a library. Search engines indexed pages, ranked them, and sent people to read them. You optimized for rankings. That era is ending.

AI search engines don't send people to your website. They read it, extract the answer, and respond directly — often without a single click. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and voice assistants are becoming the primary interface between a person's question and the world's information. Your website either gets cited, or it doesn't exist.

The Shift from Ranking to Being Cited

Traditional SEO asked: Can Google find and rank this page? GEO asks a harder question: When an AI model summarizes this topic, does it use our content as a source?

The difference matters. A #4 ranking still gets clicks. A business that isn't cited by AI gets nothing — even if it ranks well in traditional search. In competitive categories, AI-cited businesses are already capturing 30–60% of informational queries before a user ever sees a blue link.

What GEO Actually Requires

  • Answer-first structure: Lead with the direct answer, then explain. AI models skim for extractable facts.
  • Entity clarity: State who you are, what you do, and where you operate in the first 200 words — every page.
  • Structured data: FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema tell AI engines exactly what your content is and how to cite it.
  • Cited facts and statistics: AI models prefer content that references data. Include numbers. Link to sources.
  • llms.txt: A machine-readable summary of your business at /llms.txt tells AI crawlers exactly what to say about you.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Most websites were built for humans to read. AI engines have fundamentally different needs. They don't appreciate elegant prose or beautiful design — they parse structure, schema, and semantic clarity. A well-optimized GEO page often looks less impressive to a human visitor but performs dramatically better in AI citations.

This creates a real tension for businesses: optimize for the humans who visit, or for the AI systems that now gate whether those humans arrive at all.

The businesses winning this transition are building for both — using structured content that reads well to humans and is extractable by machines. That's not a design compromise. It's a new standard.
